I would like to thank you very much, and would like to reiterate what I said the other day on the phone.

You really are a brilliant company to deal with! Your service is very prompt, and you have dealt with my issue very quickly and ultra fairly!

The reliability, competence, speed of delivery and customer relations exhibited by this company, in my experience, are second to none. As they re-manufacture engines they understand the problems of reassembly and have learned which products can be trusted to complete the job. Eg. faced with choosing one of the many sealants for the 200tdi ladder to crankcase joint, a customer may be uncertain whether to use an aerobic or anaerobic sealant.Turner's know, as I now do, why to use the former.

  • Dave French - 2.25 5MB Petrol engine LFHP 22 Oct 2022

Great company to deal with , they recently completed a full refurb on my 1984 2.25 LR petrol engine, attention to detail and quality of work is second to none, i completed the project by fitting all new fuel lines and filters along with fuel pump /water pump/ alternator and distributor basically full nuts and bolts job, the engine runs very sweet and pulls well, oil pressure is right on the mark and engine temperature spot on, overall very pleased with the communication from the team and turn around time .

Excellent customer service, for the first time i'm positively impressed by ordering engine parts online. I ordered on Monday morning and the parts arrived by Tuesday afternoon in Italy! I'll leave another review once the parts are mounted and after testing them. In the meantime, thank you again for your help!

    Hi Frida

Just a quick note to thank you for your excellent service, ordered a new head last Friday, it arrived in less than four days, pretty good from one side of the world to the other. Fitted it and am stoked with the result, the extra performance particularly down low is worth the extra few dollars.

    Dear Frida Turner

I would just like to express my gratitude for the new engine sent for my Land Rover, technical advice and especially for the turbo shipment of the new clutch. Thank you so much.

I have now done some test driving, and everything seems so far very nice. There are some puffs, but I think that is due to an old carburettor. Tomorrow I will take the car to MOT testing, and hope it will pass.

I have now summer vacation and plan to take the Land Rover for a trip. When we return I will contact you regarding details aout my old engine for return. Thank you again for excellent service.

200TDI stripped engine with gas flowed head

The 200TDI stripped engine you supplied runs fantastic, it feels like its a new car from the dying slug that it was before with the gas flowed head.It makes the rpm pick up a lot quicker with no noticeable turbo lag which it had a lot before. It runs so much quieter and smoother then the last engine and when the vehicle is in top gear the engine feels like it's got a lot more energy as well.

Thanks for the engine and the help and the instructions you provided.

    Hi All,

Russell has asked me to send you a few pictures One of his engine bay and the other of the two cars at Spa last weekend with his brother who raced it.

No. 92 is the engine we have just regenerated with the top hat liners and that was the car that won outright out of 77 cars in the 61 minute race beating Aston DB4, GT40’s, Camero’s, and similar.

Russ No. 93 came thirteenth but he had a bad pit stop as someone had moved the fire extinguisher and he couldn’t put any fuel in without it so his stop was 6 minutes. No. 92 car had a 70 litre tank already so only had to do a 1 minute stop.

Thank you, the old, repaired and ‘daddy’ engine is still fantastic.

    Hi Richard and Frida,

Just to let you know all went well at the weekend in our Rover V8powered Ford Pop dragster. Thanks for another great block supplied at such short notice, amazing service!

The conditions were unfortunately not right for record breaking with a strong headwind and slippery track, but on our last run we ran 8.60 seconds to 153 mph which is only 0.06 from our no nitrous record! and the fastest we have run with a headwind. So it looks as though the work you did on my heads has paid off.

We are out again in 2 weeks so I will keep you informed. Thanks again for your excellent service.

Ductile iron flanged linered block casting

    Good Morning Richard and Frieda,

Just a short note to let you know that we were successful in achieving our goal in breaking the British lands speed record for a 3 wheeled vehicle on Monday the 14th of May.

As you know you re-lined our block and bored the liners and decked the block as per request. The 3.9 63.5 CC normally aspirated engine was tested on the dyno and produced 412bhp @ 7000rpm on Av gas/ 4 Star/ Toluene mix and makes 500LbFt @ 4400rpm we revved it to 8000 rpm and the engine performed fantastically.

We ran 180.38mph 1 way and 157.8mph into the wind in the opposite direction and broke the existing record that had stood for 12 years by 5.4mph making the 2 way average speed of 168.9mph.

We put your stickers on the bike to give you a little advertising for the company and I thought you may like to use these photos to promote the company.

Once again many thanks for doing such a fine job on the engine block and I am certain to be in need of your services again.

    Yours in sport.

I thought you might appreciate a brief update.....

Following your work on my "block" it all seemed to go back together without any issues, David Batty certainly seemed happy with what I presented him with.

I have now done about 500 miles in the car, carefully running it in as instructed, and all is going well, this mileage amounts to pretty much my annual mileage in the last couple of years!

I am determined to use it more now it has a great "new" engine, wejust need some more good weather!

Many thanks for all of your help and good work with this"project", I am forwarding you some pictures in case they are of interest/use to you, these are of the bare block, you have seen hundreds of these of course!, the rebuilt engine back in the car and a shot from "Goodwood" a couple of weeks ago.

These are on two e-mails due to file size, apparently.

300TDI stripped engine gasflowed performance head

The exchange 300tdi engine with gasflowed cylinder head has been very carefully run in and has now done 1200 miles with a change of oil and filter at approx 500 miles.

I cannot put into words how pleased I am with it. There is so much smooth torque and power .The acceleration in traffic is effortless, and there is no need to rev it, just keep changing up a gear and the grunt brings a smile to my face. It is quiet , and silky in the power delivery, and simply purrs along at cruising speeds You can almost hear it laughing at hills.

I wonder what there is to come when or if I ever need to rev it above 2700rpm,which it hasn't seen yet. I strongly advise anyone needing a new 300tdi engine to buy a Turner with the gasflowed head. It is a complete waste of money to fit anything else. My Sincere Thanks

    300TDI stripped engine performance

I refer to my letter to you of 16th November 2009, and want to let you know that the above engine, fitted to my Discovery some 13 months and 18.000km ago, continues to run very smoothly. There have been no reliability issues and the only adjustment required was to the tappets once they had bedded down.

The extra flexibility provided by the gaslfowed head makes the car more relaxing to drive, and also improves fuel consumption especially on long runs.

In the nature of things I don't see myself buying another remanufactured engine in the foreseeable future but I should not hesitate to recommend your firm to anyone who needed one. Many thanks for a first class product and a service to match.

    Your sincerely

    JF Gordon

4.6V8 stripped engine Ductile iron flanged liners

This is just a short message to thank you for the brilliant service I received when I purchased the above reconditioned engine. It arrived when I was told to my installer, with all the gaskets, oil and extras I ordered.

Once installed it runs quiet, the car drives like new and the economy has improved from 12mpg to 20mpg, which as an average mpg with a car that runs on LPG makes it a very cheap Range Rover to run. The power is really good, much better than the original engine and its smooth and effortless.

I would recommend a Turner engine to any serious Land Rover owner. My car is refurbished and with the engine now installed it is back to factory condition both mechanically and cosmetically, in fact now its better than new mechanical condition.

I will gladly speak to any prospective purchasers to endorse your engines in Northern Ireland, just contact me by email so I can agree to my details being passed on

    200TDI gasflowed performance cylinder head

Just a short note to say thank you for the supply of one of your Gasflowed 200tdi cylinder heads. Special thanks to Freda for making sure all the parts I needed were included in the order and Richard for the tour of the workshop and engine advice.

My observations of the tuned head are money well spent. With the tuned head it fools you into thinking the engine is a bit bigger. What is actually happening is the engine is more efficient when the turbo is not on boost. The engine now pulls from very low revs. At the end of my road is a junction on a hill. I used to pull out in first and rev it hard in first keeping momentum for change into second. If I short shifted into second gear with not enough revs the Disco would struggle to get its momentum. With the tuned head it just pulls, gone is the step in power delivery with the turbo acting like an on/off switch the power is delivered in a seamless strong manner. Better for towing and economy has improved.

    Again many thanks.

    Andy Dawe

    2.25 petrol 3MB Stage 1 Cylinder Head

    Dear All at Turner Engineering,

Just a quick note to say thanks for a fantastic product! A local garage– Maghull Four Wheel Drive – recently fitted a stage 1 head to my ex-military series 3 Marshall-bodied ambulance and what a difference! Although it will never be a ball of fire on the road, combined with electronic points, the difference is enormous – no more pedal to the floor to keep it at 50, no more shifting down to third or second on hills, no more queues of traffic building up behind - it easily keeps up with traffic. Considering that it’s over 30 years old, it feels as though it has a spring in its step once again. Brill!

    Thanks, Duncan Wright

I would like to thank you for your prompt and professional response to the parts I required to rebuild my 300Tdi. Also, I appreciate your help answering the technical questions regarding the overhaul. Your knowledge regarding shipping was also excellent.

    Thanks very much for everything.

Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

The head change itself took about 5 hours in total and the engine started first time and with no cloud of blue smoke – this has never happened in the 5 years I've had her. After running in etc. I was easily able to pull up a local hill in 4th that previously needed 3rd .

Also, I was able to get 126 km/h out of her on the motorway (130 limit in Denmark). 126 km/h is 78 mph in old money and 6mph faster than the original spec for a 1973 SWB. As well as being quieter inside, I certainly notice a significant improvement in driveability around town (much fewer gear changes), and the fuel consumption is considerably better; I thought at first the needle was stuck as it didn't seem to move down.We can't wait to see how it performs this summer with the caravan behind. Thank you.

    Kind regards,

TD5 cylinder head with fitting kit

    Hello Frida,

Thanks very much for sorting this out. This was the week before half term and there was a whole holiday come birthday party hanging on the availability of the Land Rover. Coupled with your efficient service and Taunton Land Rover you both did a splendid job of honouring your commitments. Very much appreciated.

Taunton Land Rover had not heard of you before, but without any prompting from me they commented on the quality of the cylinder head and kit you supplied.

The engine now feels a lot better and towed a 20ft twin axle van up the M6 complete with wife and 4 kids - with no effort at all -even thought here is 100,000 on the clock. So once again thanks very much for your efforts and even though I spent a lot more on the repair than I ever thought -Id o feel re-assured that I got value for money.

4.6V8 ductile iron flanged linered block casting

Hi, just to let you know we have achieved our aim of running an 8 second pass using a Rover V8 engine. Your cylinder block with Ductile iron liners has held up to the extreme pressures of a supercharger and methanol fuel and we are very pleased with it.

We ran a best of 8.93 @ 146 mph in the 1/4 mile and reached 119.87mph in 5.59 seconds to the 1/8 mile, with more to come. We think this is the first '8' from a rover without nitrous injection.

    2.5 Diesel new cylinder head

I just received my 2.5D cylinder head. I cannot thank you enough and am absolutely blown away by the service I received from you.You responded to all of my emails within MINUTES, the price of the head was very very fair, and shipping overseas was unbelievably fast.

I haven't put it in the Rover yet, but I'm sure I'll be just as blown away by its quality and performance. I was very upset when I found the cracks in my old head and thought I would be in for an expensive ordeal trying to find a head for this engine in the US. But you guys actually made this an enjoyable experience.

I have recommended you to my mechanic and he was also very impressed with your site. I cannot thank you enough! If only you could solve all my Rover problems....

    4.0 V8 stripped engine - gasflowed heads

Hi I don't know if you remember me but I bought a 4 litre V8 from you way back in July 2005 for my 1995 discovery.

It has now done 121,000 miles since it was fitted and it's still running as sweetly as ever! It has spent its entire life pulling a heavy trailer and when it is fully laden the gross weight is often near the maximum of 3.5 tons (plus of course the car at 2100kg and my fat labrador!) There are no significant oil leaks and obviously as you've never heard from me since I bought it I haven't had any problems what so-'ever!

So I just wanted to say "Thanks for a great engine and all the happy miles behind us so far!" :-)

    Dear Richard and Frida,

It seems a long time ago that I bought the replacement V8 from you, but it is time to pass comment!

The new motor has now done just on 5000 miles since Jim finally got it up and running, so it's probably safe to speak out.........

Thanks folks - it's everything I thought I could only dream about on a P38! Settled down well and runs like silk; responsive (alive almost) yet returns 20+ PG overall. I really am impressed with both the engineering and the brilliant, no-nonsense service you provided.

I would really like to say"I'll be back", but hopefully this motor will see me out now! So, many thanks from a well satisfied customer.

4.0 V8 Stripped Engine - Ductile iron flanged liners

After driving "Older" Discos for 20yrs, instead of upgrading in 2003 I decided to wait for my shares to mature in 2008, I patiently waited.

In March I bought my "dream machine" an 04 Discovery V8 ES Premium with every possible extra...fully loaded, Rangey wheels. Play station, full leather seats, wood Dash, satnav, Harman Kardon Hi-FIand £2700 worth of state of the Art L.P.G Injection. For 6 weeks i was in Heaven.

She then acquired a "Clicking/ticking sound that over a month or so got so bad it was attracting attention. I had it checked by every "Expert around" and spent about £1500 having new tappets ,oil pump ,Cam Shaft etc but she came back the same......I was broken hearted and even stopped driving her or even cleaning her.

After two months searching the net for an answer I came across your website and was very impressed. My mechanic called and after a conversation with Frida, (on putting down the phone he said ,"That Girl Knows what she,s talking about") and decided even though it had only done 42000 it must be the Liners.

Against every "Expert" saying its wrong, he ordered the Engine around 2.30pm. It arrived at 08.00am the next morning, and was fitted in three days.

My new engine has now done 200 miles so this covers up to now but I,m confident that all will be well, and is almost impossible to hear, the quietest V8 in the Country more responsive and more MPG. I love her again,She is Polished and shiny and I am so happy.

Every aspect, from my first conversation with Frida to typing this has been Perfect. I know I have a state of the Art Engine, made with state of the art machinery used by Professionals.

    I Cannot thank you enough.

    Yours Most Sincerely
    Brian Hoyland

PS..I totally agree with Jak Haughton. You ought to Design a Badge so other people can see that we have "Speciality Engines "fitted!!!!!!

    300TDI performance cylinder head

I fitted the new Performance Head to my 300tdi Discovery a month ago, but apart from a test I haven't really used it until this week

I fitted the new Performance Head to my 300tdi Discovery a month ago, but apart from a test I haven't really used it until this week.

On Wednesday I drove over 700 miles in the rain. I escorted 2 Dublin bound German abnormal loads across England and Wales and drove home again and the Disco didn't miss a beat. The temperature gauge stayed at just under halfway for all of the 19hr day, but the best news came today when I filled up with diesel. With the old leaky head I used to get about 21mpg, my new Turner Performance head has given me 37.5mpg for that 700 mile trip. 56 mph motorway cruising for 350 miles and 'A' road running for the rest of the time, at normal road speeds.

She also pulls very smoothly throughout the rev range and starts first turn, with no heating or smoke. I have no hesitation in recommending a performance head to any 300tdi owner, as I expect to get my money back in fuel savings in about a year, or less if the price of diesel keeps going as it has done this year.

We bought a 4.6 ltr cylinder block with ductile liners from you at the end of 2005. We fitted it in our Ford Popular Dragster and ran a best of 9.70 secs at 129 mph using super unleaded. For 2007 we changed to methanol and ran a best of 9.22 at 139.84 mph, which is as far as we know the fastest a Rover engined dragster has ever run the 1/4 mile without nitrousoxide assistance. For 2008 we are raising the compression with the hope of running high 8 seconds.

Thanks for the great block. I have attached a picture.

4.0L V8 Stripped Engine - Ductile iron flanged liners

The only delay in getting my V8 Discovery back on the road after the block cracked (at 164000-miles) was due to Land Rover's delays in supplying a new radiator. I drive my car for a living (between 20000 and 35000 miles a year) and I have a great team of engineers (Doug Dransfield, Stocksbridge , UK) to maintain it.

Frida, your knowledge of engines, the engineering team you have in your workshops and the phenomenal speed you had the engine delivered to Doug's (Thursday PM we spoke on the phone, Friday the engine was being checked and packaged, Monday Doug started work) is testament to a quality of service others can only strive to achieve – when will you start supplying radiators?

A big THANK YOU to all at Turner Engineering, a great team effort!

I work for the AA, having been in the trade all my life, and can say that this engine is not the usual "recon" available to the trade, smothered in an inch of black paint and with no record of workmanship. Having seen it, installed it with care & heard it, this is to me now a new engine.

    Hi Frida

Just to let you know I have now got the head back in the car & on the road- great improvement!I'd expected that gas-flowing would improve the top-end, but it's actually the smoothness of the engine's response which is really transformed. Now I can't feel when the turbo kicks in, the lag and then sudden power-on is gone, now it just pulls smoothly all the way up the rev range - brilliant!

Hello Richard and Frida this is a long overdue thank you for the head you supplied to me back in late December 2004 early January 2005. Just to say that the head performs brilliantly with an increase in Hp but more over a doubling of the torque output.

4.6 V8 Petrol Engine, gasflowed heads, ductile iron flanged liners

A 1995 Range Rover 4.6 HSE (139.000 miles) was brought to us with overheating/coolant loss problems. Our diagnosis was cracked block but the customer asked for the cylinder heads to be removed to check the gaskets. No visible signs of failure could be found. Having dealt with Turner Engineering for many years we sought their advice.

Frida and Richard could not have been more helpful giving advice to both ourselves and directly to our customer. It was decided to install and exchange engine fitted with gasflowed heads and ductile liners to the block casting.

The engine arrived 72 hours after ordering and was extremely well presented. All gaskets needed were supplied along with two 5 litre cans of engine oil. It was spotlessly clean with clear concise instructions detailing almost any problem that could occur whilst rebuilding. Any other problems during the rebuild were quickly resolved over the phone by the staff at Turner Engineering with no hint of us ‘being a nuisance'. In fact they seemed pleased that we consulted with them rather than went ahead and got it wrong!

The fitting of this engine has transformed an otherwise tired vehicle. It now pulls crisply and cleanly from quite low revs giving the impression of a much larger engine under the bonnet than it actually is. Low down torque is vastly improved, with 70mph being achieved at 1700 rpm whilst just feathering the throttle pedal. Time will tell but we consider an improvement in fuel economy will also result.

Although not the cheapest on the market we consider this to be the only cure for the notorious V8 cracked block problem. The relative small extra charge for the fitting of gasflowed heads is well worth considering for the vast improvement it achieves.

Congratulations to Frida and Richard and all at Turner Engineering for an excellent product and superb customer service.

Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

    Hi Frida

Just a note to thank you and your team for the excellent service I had from you recently when I purchased a Stage 1 cylinder head from you. From order to delivery was around 24 hours, and your courier collected my old unit within 24 hours of my call. Your response to me over the phone was knowledgeable, helpful and very professional.

The new head has now been in place for a week and has covered about 100 miles, so this is only an initial observation, but I am very pleased with the results. After fitting the head and a new carb, I turned it over with the coil disconnected for a few moments to get some oil pressure, and then tried to start it. It started almost before I had fully turned the key, and settled immediately to a steady idle. The engine is now smooth and quiet throughout the rev range. There has been no dramatic improvement in performance, but the vehicle pulls much better, and hills where I used to have to drop to third are now taken in top without loss of speed. Your advice to me that the Stage 1 head makes it feel like a bigger engine is absolutely correct. The only problem is that the increase in power now makes me realize how much I need an overdrive!

Many thanks again for excellent service and a brilliant product. I'm now looking forward to many miles of happy Land rovering. The Discovery is sulking because it hasn't been touched for a week.

All the best to all of you

The engine runs "SPOT ON" , well done! Fired it up last night after a small problem .......... forgot the KEY! (left at my house).Smoked very little at start-up and ran like Swiss Watch. Put about 45 miles on last night between 20-50 mph. It just sounds SWEET. Did I tell you it runs GREAT? Wasn't sure.

Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

    Landy 90 1987 2.25. [ S Wales ]

Hello Turner Eng;just a few lines, regarding the gas flow head I purchased with you Sept 2004 for a landy I purchased Feb of this year from Brighton. It was in really nice condition for year on driving it on a test drive at Brighton I thought very good, drives well no oil leaks, quiet, let's go for it. So I parted with my money and off we go my wife following me back to S Wales. On the motorways it was really fast [on the flat] It had a transplant of a 2.25 as it was a diesel turbo in true life all the running gear was still turbo .But with this lump in front that could not pull granny of the urinal.

So a few months of late nights in the garage trying to tweak it up and a lot of frayed tempers, it got a little better, but not good enough for the hills of S Wales I would stand there scratching my head wondering why I bought this load of rubbish .My wife thought I had left the country. Then I read about Turner gasflowheads still weary, I thought give them a call I told them the problem I was having. So a Mrs Turner ran me through the difference the head should make,ok I thought lets go for it. It was delivered the day after so I made a start. But still very weary,on finishing the job ok lets see what happens fired it up hmmmm, ok now how is it when I flick the switch for lpg. I start to smile lets get it out on the road still weary,u p the hills down the hills not changing down a lot more smiles.

    Frida I love you

    Hi Frida,

Just a quick note to thank you for the speedy delivery and service regarding the supply of my new cylinder head. I successfully fitted it in a morning on Saturday and am very very pleased with the results.

It has transformed the vehicle and while a 109” 2 ¼ litre will never be the fastest thing in the world it now feels much more sprightly, keeps up with normal traffic and pulls strongly up hills throughout the rev range.

I will be in touch next week to arrange for my old head to be collected.

Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

I recently bought one of your stage 1 gas flowed cylinder heads for my swb series 3 land rover and I wanted to let you know how well it is performing. Fitting was very easy and once everything was checked over the first thing that I noticed upon starting the engine was how well it started - just pull out the choke, turn the key and it fires up straight away.

The second thing that I noticed was the sound - a much deeper, smoother noise comes from the vehicle as though a bigger engine has been fitted. The performance brings a smile to my face. The vehicle now pulls overdrive like it previously did without, and upon changing up through the gears as I come back on the throttle it leaps forwards. The improvement is particularly noticeable at low revs, where it pulls better than a Tdi, and responds to a blip on the throttle with eager acceleration. All in all the land rover is much more willing to do what is asked of it.

Just a note to say how pleased I am with the Lead Free head I had from you for my Rover P4 80 in 2001, it doesn't seem that long ago. Since then the car has been driven to Sweden and Germany on continental tours and has covered about 6000 miles. The engine is very responsive, smooth and burns no oil on overrun. Your suggestion to fit the little valve caps on the valve stems has meant the clearances have hardly changed. Excellent value and Service. I always recommend yourselves if asked about replacement engines etc.

2.5 n/a Diesel cylinder head gasflowed

(Oscar originally bought a complete all ancillary engine elsewhere int he UK)

A good engine is the heart of every terrain vehicle and for a Land Rover you will naturally go to the country of birth.

The compression in the block is too low and after deliberating we decided to have the cylinder head reworked. On advice of friends we have this done by Turner Engineering in combination with a visit to Old Sodbury. Turner is the specialist in gasflowing the inlet and exhaust ports for extra torque.Complete rework of cylinder head, including gasflowing.

Because we really don't trust anything anymore and the cylinder head is removed anyway we decide to tackle the rest of the engine at the same time. New piston rings, honing the cylinder bores and check the crankshaft and bearings. After re assembling everything the engine sounds totally different, much quieter, no more rattling and on the test drive a very noticeable improvement in performance.

It appears we finally bought real air in the UK! Now it remains for the gear box to be rebuilt and we can start enjoying our very special self built Land Rover 109 S2a from 1969!

  • Noel Clark - 3rd May 20033 May 2003

Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

After purchasing and installing a new overdrive on my 1966 Series IIa 109" the lack of performance from the standard 7:1 CR 2.25 petrol engine became very evident, even the slightest gradient having an adverse effect on road speed. Having invested the money in the overdrive I wanted to increase the power of the engine enough to make the overdrive use-able but did not want to sacrifice long term reliability.

Virtually all sources suggested the cylinder head as the place to start and after looking at information on various websites the information on the Turner Engineering site immediately struck a chord with me - BHP is largely irrelevant, torque is by far the most important characteristic to consider when upgrading any road vehicle engine. After telephoning Turner Engineering and having a very informative discussion with Frida Turner I decided to go for a Turner stage 1 8:1 CR performance unleaded head. This duly arrived the following day and with the assistance of a friend was fitted the day after.

I couldn't wait to try it on the road and the difference was immediately evident within 10 seconds of leaving my driveway. The engine felt so much more alive and the vehicle really wanted to go, I was very impressed. I then found a stretch of dual carriage way to see how happy the vehicle was in overdrive top on gradients - the area I badly wanted improved. I was not disappointed, gentle gradients were not noticeable and even moderate gradients were handled with ease.

As time has gone on I've seen how far and I can push it and a hill that the vehicle had difficulty with in top gear no overdrive it will now climb in top gear with the overdrive engaged without laboring. In a nutshell it feels like someone has removed the 2.25 litre engine and fitted a bigger one! I can honestly say that this head was worth every penny and has opened my eyes to the fact that there is no need to spend huge amounts of money on upgrading everything in sight.

    Many thanks Turner Engineering.

For a number of years now we have exclusively used Turner Engineering 2.25 HP engines in our service work and restorations. We use these engines because of the high quality product, prompt delivery times and attention to detail that takes place in the build ups of these engines. The numerous Turner engines we have installed have all performed well, and we have had no warranty issues of any kind with our 2.25 engines since switching to Turner engines vs.the other suppliers we had sourced engines from.

We even find that, as good as these engines are, they even save us money over doing rebuilds here in our own shop. We find our relationship with Turner to be a total win/win situation. We get excellent performance, no problems of any kind and happy customers that use phrases like "runs like a Swiss watch" to describe our repairs when we use Turner engines.

As the premiere restoration shop in the USA for Series Land Rovers, we only select world class products to make it into our award winning restorations, and our service work. Turner engines meet our exacting demands and have never let us down. We look forward to fitting many more.

2.25 3MB Petrol stripped engine LFHP

LRO project vehicle Series IIA, registration NFC 314H, was originally purchased around ten years ago by Popular Classics magazine. Then after much use by LRO, mostly due to impending MoT failure, it was dismantled in 1999 for a complete rebuild. The petrol engine (with unknown mileage) was well worn and the only option was replacement. As the LRO project vehicles principle reason for existence is to provide stuff to write about in LRO, it was deemed a good idea to serialise the rebuild of the 2.25 motor in the workshop section of the magazine (September 1999-January 2000, five parts; plus installation in vehicle, Spring 2001). Not something many readers are likely to attempt, but, if every part of the rebuild was covered, then the correct procedures for each stage of the process could be detailed for reference. This series of features also made it clear just how much knowledge, access to quality parts, time and specialist equipment is needed, to rebuild an engine to the sort of standards that will ensure virtually indefinite reliability. It also serves to illustrate the financial considerations of attempting a rebuild yourself. ie. by the time you've sourced the parts and rebuilt the motor, how much less will it cost than buying a complete new engine in the first place?

Turner Engineering's reputation for quality and attention to detail, meant that it was the first name to be mentioned when the inevitability of a rebuild became apparent.

So, 4500 miles and nearly two years later how's it performing?

The 8.1 compression ratio, 'Stage 1', unleaded, gas flowed head is an optimization of the existing Land Rover set-up, rather than an out-and-out performance modification to create more horsepower. Compared to standard, with the Turner engine, there's a noticeable increase in acceleration. The standard Land Rover 2.25 petrol will also start to run out of steam up long hills, whereas even using a standard 36IV Zenith carb and Land Rover air filter, the Stage 1 Turner doesn't. In fact it takes a laden 750kg payload trailer to bring it back to the feel of a standard Land Rover set-up on hills. With the Turner motor, the trailer doesn't seem to make much difference to performance on the flat at all. I would imagine a motor like this would be a real advantage in a fully laden LWB or when towing, for instance, a horsebox. Standard servicing procedures have been religiously adhered to, and the only additions to the Turner motor are a Rocky Mountain spin-off oil filter and a Kenlowe fan. Ignition is standard points and distributor. Reliability has been 100%, whatever the weather. According to the speedo top speed is just off the clock - around 72mph. It'll cheerfully cruise at 60mph in fourth gear, although at this speed fuel consumption will drop to around 18mpg. In everyday use expect 20-22mpg.

What more can I say? So far a happy customer!

Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

I bought one of your gasflowed heads for my Series 111 petrol (1981) in April 2002. For a while previously I had been debating how best to improve performance to give us a touring vehicle. I have just noticed the long thread from January titled Warning for Series Owners on LRE forum in which you debate the merits of the various schemes to improve performance. I wish I'd seen it when it was being written!

I feel I must write to tell you what a great job this new head is doing. The engine seemed quite perky before at low revs, but on hills and trying to accelerate on the flat above about 35MPH would hardly manage, although it could sit at about 65 if asked. I'd done almost no vehicle maintenance before buying the LR a year ago, and fitting the head is by far the largest job. However, it all went smoothly, and I am looking forward to taking the family touring and camping this year, cruising easily in a way we couldn't before. I intend to keep with standard fittings, as recommended by you. I want a vehicle that will last for many years. We'll be fitting good tyres (Michelin XPC) and an overdrive this week. Though we are working on a tight budget we feel that these sort of improvements will be cost effective in the long run.

All of which is to endorse your product. There is a particularly long hill out of Hexham which the poor beast couldn't manage except in screaming third gear. Now she storms up in fourth, accelerating to the top if we feel the need to show off and waste the petrol! The first thing we did when we'd fitted the new head was to try this hill - we were cheering all the way!

    Best Wishes
    Arthur Haswell, Hexham, Northumberland

Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

I have fitted or should I say I had Dunsfold Land Rovers fit a Turner stage 1 head to my early 90 2.25 5mb engine. This conversion has transformed the 90, it is difficult to explain but for starters it no longer slows on hills, it has more torque through the rev range and this is without getting into the second stage of the twin choke. If you run on LPG it is a must. The engine is also smoother and more responsive.

This conversion will not make it a sports car but will make you keep up with the traffic with no effort. Tested on the motorway I can easily maintain 70 and my top speed has moved to 80mph +.Dunsfold LR also recommended the Turner head as very good. To help anybody withthe decision my brother is a rally driver and has had all his rally cars converted to stage 1 or 2 heads as it does increase power and performance.

2.25 3MB Petrol stripped engine - Stage 1 performance head fitted

Jim featured the engine he purchased for his own Land Rover. The engine was internally standard with the exception of the gasflowed cylinder head. Externally Jim had fitted luminition ignition, a free flowing exhaust system, a Pierce manifold and a Weber 28-32 DGV carburettor.

In my case, all the modifications have added up to a rip-snorting two and a quarter. Passing traffic is now possible and hill climbing on the highwayis light years better than before. Hills that once required third or lower, now can be pulled in top gear at close to the speed limit. Top speed has increased well past 80mph because the rpm range and power curve is extended significantly. At this writing, there are 6247 miles on the Turner engine. Not one drop of oil has escaped from it. It's been smooth and quiet and maintains 50 pounds of oil pressure. After the initial valve adjustments, clearances have kept steady.

I chose Turner because I wanted a well built engine to use as a strong basis for a modified power plant. I believe I got just what I wanted. My opinion is that it would be hard to find a more meticulous rebuilder.
