Seal was not tight enough to seal, found another one locally which did fit.

Pioneer Weston is the original seal manufacturer to Land Rover. The split seal only assumes it's correct fit, form and function when correctly compressed between the half plates (this assumes oem half plates are used).
You do not state whether you attempted to fit the Pioneeer Weston seal (full process) or merely fitted the seal to the crankshaft and observed a gap which prior to fitting the half plates is normal (with the garter spring in place).
The seal you obtained elsewhere may have given the appearance of having less gap when initially fitted to the crankshaft. This would suggest that the seal you have obtained is actually a looser fit.
It begs the question as to why we were not consulted at any point of this repair. I have walked numerous experienced Land Rover mechanics through this process over the years.
